Osborne Reynolds o Brifysgol Manceinion oedd un o’r cynharaf i ddefnyddio modelau hydrolig drwy gynllunio a gweithredu model llanw a thrai i Ferswy Uchaf yn 1885.  Yna ar ôl 1920 gwelwyd cynnydd cyflym mewn labordai ar gyfer astudio problemau peirianyddol hydrolig drwy ddefnyddio modelau yn ôl graddfa. Y prosesau ffisegol sy’n cyfrannu at y model yw disgyrchiant, ffrithiant, gwanhad, momentwm, tyrfedd a chroeswasgiad.  Y rhai pwysicaf yw disgyrchiant a ffrithiant ond mae gwanhad yn bwysig mewn systemau storfeydd o waith dyn a rhannau hir o afon (dros 10 km gyda [[gorlifdir]] llydan).  O ran afonydd, y cydrannau modelu hydrolig pwysig yw amcangyfrif llif, topograffi, cyfernodau (garwedd, pont, cored) a lefelau llanw/ymchwydd.  Mae’r llif yn llifo i mewn ac allan o’r model drwy ffiniau’r model lle bydd llif yn cael ei nodi ar ffin i fyny’r afon, a lefel y dŵr ar ffin i lawr yr afon.  Mae’n bwysig bod maint y model a lleoliadau ffiniau’r model yn berthnasol a bod y data gorau ar gael yma.  Er mwyn i’r model fod yn realistig dylid cynnwys unrhyw amddiffynfeydd (argloddiau a waliau) ac effaith [[newid hinsawdd]] gan luosi’r paramedr (llif, glawiad, cyflymder gwynt alltraeth neu uchder ton) yn dibynnu ar ba gyfnod o flynyddoedd a fodelir (1990-2025, 2025-2055, 2055-2085, 2085-2115)  a gwelir canllawiau am hyn yn nogfennau NTC 15 (TAN 15) a PPS 25.&lt;br /&gt;
